Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our Pita Safaris representative and transferred to your comfortable hotel in Arusha. After check-in, spend the remainder of the day relaxing and preparing for your upcoming Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. Your mountain guide will meet you for a detailed climb briefing, equipment check and final preparations, including an overview of the Rongai Route, altitude considerations and what to expect during your northern approach to the mountain.
Elevation: Approx. 1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Distance: Airport transfer only
Hiking Time: None
Habitat: Arusha highland environment
Accommodation: Arusha Planet Lodge
After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive towards the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, travelling towards the Rongai Gate near the Tanzania–Kenya border. After completing park registration and meeting your mountain crew, begin your Rongai Route Kilimanjaro trek through the mountain's lower forest environment.
The Rongai approach offers a quieter and more remote introduction to Kilimanjaro, with the trail gradually ascending through woodland and montane forest. Keep an eye out for colourful birdlife and, depending on conditions, forest wildlife as you make your way towards Simba Camp. Settle into camp, enjoy dinner and prepare for the next stage of your climb.
Start Elevation: Approx. 1,950 m / 6,398 ft
End Elevation: Approx. 2,625 m / 8,612 ft
Distance: Approx. 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane forest and woodland
Accommodation: Simba Camp
After breakfast, continue your ascent through the changing landscapes of the northern side of Kilimanjaro. As you gain altitude, the forest gradually gives way to open moorland and heath, revealing broader views across the surrounding landscape and towards the volcanic peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Walk at a steady pace with your experienced mountain guide, allowing your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude. Continue towards Kikelewa Camp, located in a quieter section of the mountain with dramatic views and a strong sense of wilderness.
Start Elevation: Approx. 2,625 m / 8,612 ft
End Elevation: Approx. 3,630 m / 11,909 ft
Distance: Approx. 12 km / 7.5 miles
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and heath zone
Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp
After breakfast, continue climbing towards the spectacular Mawenzi volcanic formation, one of the defining features of the Kilimanjaro landscape. The trail becomes increasingly open as you enter the high-altitude moorland and alpine environment, with the jagged peaks of Mawenzi creating an impressive backdrop.
Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, dramatically positioned beneath the eastern side of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon resting and allowing your body to acclimatize while enjoying the remarkable mountain scenery around camp.
Start Elevation: Approx. 3,630 m / 11,909 ft
End Elevation: Approx. 4,310 m / 14,140 ft
Distance: Approx. 7 km / 4.3 miles
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: High moorland and alpine terrain
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
After breakfast, leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the high-altitude landscape towards Kibo Camp, the final overnight point before your summit attempt. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert, while the enormous Kibo summit cone rises ahead.
This is an important acclimatization stage, so your guide will maintain a steady pace and monitor your wellbeing as you gain altitude. Arrive at Kibo Camp, where you will have an early dinner before resting for the demanding summit ascent during the night.
Start Elevation: Approx. 4,310 m / 14,140 ft
End Elevation: Approx. 4,703 m / 15,430 ft
Distance: Approx. 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Kibo Camp
Wake shortly after midnight for the most challenging and rewarding stage of your Mount Kilimanjaro climb. Begin the slow ascent through the darkness towards the crater rim, passing through steep scree and high-altitude terrain as you make your way towards Gilman's Point and Stella Point.
From the crater rim, continue towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. If conditions and your physical wellbeing allow, reach the summit around sunrise and celebrate this extraordinary achievement while taking in panoramic views across the surrounding mountain landscape.
After your summit experience, begin the long descent towards Kibo Camp before continuing down to Horombo Camp, where you can rest and recover after your summit day.
Start Elevation: 4,703 m / 15,430 ft
Summit Elevation: 5,895 m / 19,341 ft
End Elevation: Approx. 3,720 m / 12,205 ft
Distance: Approx. 15–17 km / 9–10.5 miles
Hiking Time: Approx. 11–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert, arctic summit zone and high-altitude moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Camp
After breakfast, begin your final descent from Horombo through the beautiful moorland and rainforest zones of Mount Kilimanjaro. The vegetation becomes progressively greener as you descend towards Marangu Gate, where you will complete the park exit formalities and say farewell to your mountain crew.
After completing the trek, transfer back to Arusha for your second comfortable hotel night. Spend the evening relaxing and recovering after your summit achievement, or discuss your onward Tanzania travel plans with your Pita Safaris team.
Start Elevation: Approx. 3,720 m / 12,205 ft
End Elevation: Approx. 1,860 m / 6,102 ft
Distance: Approx. 20 km / 12.4 miles
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland, heath and montane rainforest
Accommodation: Arusha Planet Lodge
After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Arusha before your scheduled transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home or onward journey.
Depending on your travel plans, you may continue to another destination in Tanzania. Travellers looking to unwind after their mountain adventure can extend their journey with a relaxing Tanzania beach holiday in Zanzibar or along the mainland coast, combining the challenge of Kilimanjaro with time to rest beside the Indian Ocean.
