Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you will be warmly welcomed by our Pita Safaris representative and transferred to your budget hotel in Nairobi. After check-in, spend the remainder of the day relaxing after your flight or, if time permits, enjoy an optional Nairobi excursion before your Kenya budget safari begins. Depending on your arrival time, you may visit Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, or the Karen Blixen Museum. In the evening, receive a safari briefing from your guide and prepare for your journey into northern Kenya.
Day 2: Nairobi - Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, depart Nairobi in your 4×4 safari vehicle and travel north through the scenic landscapes of central Kenya toward the dramatic semi-arid wilderness of Samburu National Reserve. The journey provides a fascinating transition from Nairobi's urban environment to northern Kenya's rugged scenery, with opportunities to see changing landscapes, local communities, farms, and the foothills of Mount Kenya along the way.
Arrive at your budget safari lodge or camp in time for lunch before heading out for your first afternoon game drive. Explore the reserve in search of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, and Samburu's distinctive northern species. Keep your camera ready for your first possible sightings of the Samburu Special Five.
Day 3: Full Day Samburu National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring the spectacular Samburu National Reserve on morning and afternoon game drives accompanied by your professional safari guide. This is one of the highlights of your northern Kenya safari, offering opportunities to discover wildlife species that are rarely encountered in the Masai Mara.
Search for the famous Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and Beisa oryx. You may also encounter elephants along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, lions resting beneath acacia trees, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.
Enjoy a relaxed lunch at your accommodation or a suitable safari setting before continuing your afternoon wildlife exploration. The open landscapes and distinctive wildlife of Samburu provide exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography.
Day 4: Samburu - Ol Pejeta Conservancy
After breakfast, depart Samburu and travel south toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of Kenya's most important wildlife conservation areas. Upon arrival, check into your budget lodge or camp and enjoy lunch before exploring this remarkable conservancy on an afternoon game drive.
Ol Pejeta is particularly famous for its successful rhino conservation efforts and is home to both black and white rhinos. The conservancy also protects lions, elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hartebeests, and other wildlife. Visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where rescued chimpanzees are cared for in a protected environment, subject to opening hours and availability.
Your afternoon game drive offers an excellent opportunity to experience the connection between wildlife tourism and conservation while enjoying the beautiful Laikipia landscapes.
Day 5: Ol Pejeta - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, leave Ol Pejeta and continue toward the Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya's best-known rhino conservation destinations. Enjoy the scenic journey through central Kenya before arriving at your budget accommodation for lunch.
In the afternoon, embark on a game drive around Lake Nakuru's diverse habitats. Search for black and white rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, lions, leopards, and other wildlife. Depending on seasonal and lake conditions, you may also see flamingos and numerous other waterbirds around the lake.
The park's combination of woodland, grassland, rocky viewpoints, and lakeshore habitats makes Lake Nakuru a rewarding addition to this affordable Kenya safari.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, depart Lake Nakuru and journey through the scenic Great Rift Valley toward the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The drive takes you through changing landscapes and rural communities before reaching the vast savannah plains of the Mara ecosystem.
Arrive at your budget safari lodge or camp for lunch before setting out on an afternoon game drive. This is your first opportunity to search for the legendary Big Five, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos, alongside cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos, and abundant birdlife.
As the afternoon progresses, watch the savannah transform beneath the golden African light before returning to your accommodation for dinner and relaxation.
Day 7: Full Day Masai Mara National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve with morning and afternoon game drives accompanied by your professional safari guide. This is the main Big Five wildlife experience of your Kenya budget safari.
Search across the open grasslands for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and other wildlife while keeping watch for cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species. If traveling during the Great Wildebeest Migration season, you may witness huge herds moving through the Mara ecosystem, with river crossings occurring at certain times and locations.
Enjoy lunch at your accommodation or, where appropriate and permitted, a picnic lunch during your game-drive adventure. You can also add an optional Maasai cultural village visit to learn about local traditions, livelihoods, and community life.
Day 8: Masai Mara - Nairobi / Departure
Wake early for a final morning game drive in the Masai Mara, when cooler temperatures and softer light can provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. Search for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, and other wildlife before leaving the reserve.
After breakfast, begin your return journey to Nairobi. Enjoy the changing landscapes as you travel from the Mara through the Great Rift Valley and onward toward Kenya's capital.
Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon for drop-off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for your onward flight, or at your Nairobi hotel if you have arranged an additional night.

Travel Tips
Practical advice to help you prepare for a smooth and rewarding safari
- Best time: June–October for dry conditions, excellent wildlife viewing, and strong opportunities to see animals around water sources.
- Samburu: Carry lightweight, breathable clothing because northern Kenya can be considerably warmer during the day.
- Masai Mara: July–October is especially popular because of the Great Wildebeest Migration, so early booking is recommended.
- Lake Nakuru: Bring binoculars for rhinos, giraffes, flamingos, and the park's diverse birdlife.
- Ol Pejeta: Allow time to appreciate its important rhino and chimpanzee conservation work in addition to the wildlife viewing.
- Photography: Carry a camera with extra batteries and memory cards for wildlife and landscape photography.
- Early mornings: Bring a warm layer for early game drives, particularly in the highland areas around Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru.
- Budget travel: Booking early can help secure the best-value accommodation while maintaining comfortable rooms and convenient locations.
- Travel light: Soft-sided luggage is generally easier to manage in safari vehicles and at smaller safari lodges and camps.
