    Route Overview

    The Machame route is known by many as the “Whiskey” route of Mount Kilimanjaro. After Marangu route, Machame is the second known popular route on the mountain offering picturesque and stunning of both Meru and Kilimanjaro landscapes. The tracks on Machame route is physical demanding and require people with some trekking experience since the tracks are strenuous. All trekkers usually come from different countries and trekkers. Sleep in tents pitched on the camping grounds and meals are served in a mass tent or blanket outside if the weather is clear. The Machame route can be done for 6 days but extra night on the mountain will power your summit success by having one more night for acclimatization. Descent is down via Mweka tracks where the final night will be at Mweka or millennium camp.

  • Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport - Moshi

    Pick up from Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Moshi. You will have early evening pre-climbing briefing on the trek. Dinner and overnight at Panama Garden Resort Moshi. (HB)

  • Day 2: Moshi - Machame Camp

    After breakfast transfer to Kilimajoro National park gate at Machame. Start the first section of the climb through the mountain forest to Machame Campsite at 10,000ft/3,000m. Aproximate walking is 5 to 7hours. Meals and overnight at Machame Camp. {B/ L/ D}

  • Day 3: Machame Camp - Shira Camp

    Early today after breakfast you will start trekking up to the second high-altitude camp, Shira Camp (3,845 m). Follow the steep ridge across heath and moorland to picnic rock and the Shira plateau, to Shira campsite at 12500ft/3845m. Aproximate walking is 5 to 7hours. The most spectacular views of Kibo peak can be seen from Shira Camp. Meals and overnight at Shira Camp. {B/ L/ D}

  • Day 4: Shira Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

    After breakfast you will leave Shira Camp (3,845 m) and start your way to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section of the route has a lot of ascents and descents to Lava tower, where you will rest a while, before continuing through the Barranco valley to the beautiful Barranco Camp. The trek will take approximately 6 - 7 hrs. Meals and overnight at Barranco Camp. {B/L/D}

  • Day 5: Barranco Camp - Barafu Camp

    Early wakeup, breakfast spend the morning climbing steadily on to Barafu, which is Swahili for ice! This camp is located on the ridge below the summit cone. You have now completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. This walk will take around 3 hours meaning that you will arrive at Barafu in time to spend the afternoon resting and enjoy an early dinner in preparation for the summit climb. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this position. Meals and overnight at Barafu camp. {B/L/D}

  • Day 6: Barafu Camp - Uhuru peak 5,895 M - Mweka Camp

    At around midnight you will be a woken by your guide with a warm cup of tea and biscuits to get you ready for your final ascent. The moon and your headlamps will be your only source of light as you make your way up to Stella point, reaching the crater rim in about 5 – 7hrs. Another 1-2 hours will take you to Uhuru peak (5895m) where you can enjoy the sun rising over the African landscape, casting a pink hue over the snowy peak and making the glaciers sparkle like diamonds around you. After capturing this incredible view achievement on film, you will start your descent along the same route back to Barafu camp where your team awaits you with some snacks and refreshments. Rested and relaxed you will make your way to Mweka camp for your last night on the highest mountain in Africa. Meals and overnight at Mweka Camp. {B/L/D}

  • Day 7: Mweka camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi

    After breakfast descend the mountain to the park gate approximately 3 - 4 hours. You will be met by your driver guide then transferred to Moshi or Arusha. The rest of the day is free to rest. Dinner and overnight at Panama Garden Resort Moshi or Mc Elly’s Hotel Arusha. {B/L/D

  • Day 8: Departure

    After breakfast you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport or to shuttle bus to Nairobi or to your next destination. {B/B}
